(N roster spots) Practice Squad (PS) players (see PS players, below).

IR players must be listed as 'Doubtful' or greater by the NFL team for which they play. When a player comes off IR, the owner must ensure their roster stays capped at 20 spots. This may mean they need to drop a player to conform.

PS player do not count toward the roster limit of 20. Adding a player to the practice squad essentially adds a 4th year to their 3-year contract (see below). An owner may pull a player off of PS and insert them into their lineup any time during the season. This voids the 4th year of their contract. This may mean that an owner needs to cut another player to conform with the roster limit of 20 players.

Injured Reserve Spots (IR)

When an NFL team declares that a player is hurt (Questionable / Doubtful / Out / IR), the PAFFL-OG team owning that player may put him on the IR spot mentioned above. When/if the player is eventually declared active by his NFL team, he becomes active once again in the PAFF-OG. The owner must return the player to his/her active roster. If necessary, the owner must announce a cut to make space for the returning player within one week of the player’s activation. If the owner fails to announce a cut before the deadline, when one is required, the IR player is automatically cut and returned to the free agent pool. Injured reserve spots are not a tradable asset.

Practice Squad (PS) Spots

Two P.S. spots are awarded to every PAFFL-OG team each year. When a player is given the P.S. designation:

Their salary counts against the franchise’s salary cap

The player is made inactive for the year - they cannot be used in a line-up

The player’s contract is extended for 1 year (effectively creating a 4-year contract)

Players may be placed on the PS more than once, but they cannot be placed on the PS in consecutive seasons. The PS spot is often used for rookies or seriously injured players who likely will not contribute during the year. Players may be taken off the PS at any time during the season, however, activating these players rescinds the 4th year of the contract. If pulling a player off of the PS causes the roster to exceed the 20 active player limit, a cut must be made at the same time. PS spot designations must be declared between The Auction and the roster cut-down date. As noted, PS spot salary allocations do count against the annual salary cap. Both of a team’s annual PS spots are highly coveted tradable assets.
