With the PAFFL auction less than a month out (and hopefully the NFL lock out coming to an end shortly), I wanted to post a revised prediction on rookie picks for 2011.

I love the NFL draft because it creates some clarity for team depth charts and most importantly brings new talent into the league. This year, thanks to the lockout, the draft takes on more importance than any other over the past 24 years I've been following the draft, because there's been no free agency or trades, thus resulting in NFL teams applying need based selections more than I can remember in past drafts.

It feels a little hollow this year, little talk across the board with the draft nearly upon us. I'll be watching tomorrow with a mai tai in hand with a close look on the following:

Now that we know Andrew Luck is out of the 2011 NFL draft, I thought it would be interesting to highligh the winners & losers of this decision and talk a little about what this means for the 2011 draft, with a special emphasis on fantasy football (b/c let's be honest, that's what all us super fans mostly care about anyway :).

With the news that Stanford junior (sophomore in terms of athletic eligibility) QB Andrew Luck will stay at in school for another year to graduate, twitter is blowing up with negative reactions. First, we need to remember that its noble for a student to actually want to graduate from college. Too many people forget that college football (or basketball) is actually COLLEGE and that these student athletes are actually STUDENTS.

First the news that former heisman trophy winner, the 10th overall pick in the '06 draft, Matt Leinart, had been released, then the Arizona Cardinals head coach, Ken Whisenhunt, states that undrafted free agent, Max Hall, had been the best QB in camp and would enter the year as the primary backup to Derek Anderson.

This Thursday is the start of the first ever NFL draft in primetime, beginning with the 1st round Thursday night, followed by the 2nd & 3rd rounds on Friday evening, and finishing up with rounds 4 - 7 on Saturday. Many NFL pundits are predicting a strong crop of NFL talent this year, particularly between rounds 2-4, where an influx of underclassmen (51 which is a record) and a plethora of good potential talent promise to make this draft one of the best in a while.

With the news dominated by the passing of Michael Jackson, the NFL and fantasy football communities lost a great player today. Steve McNair was apparently murdered, shot & killed, in an apartment with a female friend. The 36 year old, three time pro bowler and one of the first african-american quarterbacks to have the poise of a traditional drop back style thrower to also have the mobility to win games with his legs, will be missed.

I've started to read religiously The National Football Post. While most of the content is general, I love former NFL GM Michael Lombardi's inside perspective. While its just another opinion, he breaks it down from a general manager's viewpoint giving you a look not from a journalist but from a lifelong NFL personnel man.

but my head says Pittsburgh will roll to its 6th Super Bowl title later this evening. While the Arizona Cardinals are the true cinderella choice, an original NFL franchise which has not tasted a title in sixty years (not to mention only a single playoff victory in the past thirty years). However not every underdog succeeds and in this case the odds are heavily against the Cardinals.
