Steve Smith for Randy Moss

The Fightin' Irie continue their torrid pace of reshaping their squad with another deal this morning with the unusually quiet but picking up steam Team Kitty.  But the highlight of the day was a one for one deal between the Naughty Thoughts & South Whore Jibbers

Biggest Super Bowl Upset Ever?

Forty eight hours later, I'm still in a state of disbelief over the 42nd Super Bowl.  The New York Giants were the better team and deserved to win but the Patriots had been up until February 3rd, arguably the greatest NFL team of all-time.  That's hard for me to write as a die-hard San Francisco 49'ers fan who could make an argument that the '84, '89 and '94 squads have to be in consideration but no team had ripped apart their NFL schedule as convincingly as the Patriots did this season.

2007 Fantasy Football All-PAFFL Team

The 2007 regular season is finalized and its time to recognize the studs that made this regular season sizzle and led to the Ron Jeremy Fanclub being the leading PAFFL team throughout the regular season.  You'll notice some trends as QB-WR tandems in New England & Dallas have exploded this year to dominant their respective positions unlike any other tandems in NFL history.

Is there an NFL conspiracy for the Patriots?

Following Monday Night's game between the Baltimore Ravens and the New England Patriots, there are allegations about a possible NFL conspiracy to aid the Pats in their quest for an undefeated season.  While many of the allegations are coming off as sour grapes from disgruntled and frustrated Ravens defensive players, its an interesting topic.

Does Randy Moss & Terrell Owens make Tom Brady & Tony Romo?

The question was posed today, do the stud fantasy WR's Terrell Owens & Randy Moss make fantasy stud QB's Tony Romo & Tom Brady?  Or vice versa?   It's an interesting question and one you could argue either way but I think the answer is a pretty easy one.  The quarterback makes the receiver, always has and always will.  Tom Brady has been a top 5 fantasy quarterback for five consecutive years prior to Randy Moss' arrival in New England.  And for those that don't remember, Moss is the same receiver who struggled to be even relevant to fantasy leaguers the past two years in Oakland.

Randy Moss & Edgerrin James for Steven Jackson

The Fightin' Irie and South Whore Jibbers consummated easily the largest deal of the 2007 season this evening.

The Irie dealt WR Randy Moss, RB Edgerrin James and their 2008 Topper/Holdover to the South Whore Jibbers for RB Steven Jackson ($55, 2007), $2 in '08 cash and $2 for every South Whore playoff victory in '07 in '08 cash.

RB's Laurence Maroney & Sammy Morris for QB Trent Edwards & WR Vincent Jackson

The Fightin' Irie was extremely active over the past twenty four hours completing several deals.  The biggest of the season to date (IMO) was the following with East Bay Funk

FI acquires RB's Sammy Morris ($10, 2009) & Laurence Maroney ($55, 2008) & K Rob Bironas ($1, 2008) in exchange for East Bay Funk receiving QB Trent Edwards ($16, 2009), RB Michael Robinson ($7, 2008), WR Vincent Jackson ($7, 2007) & K Phil Dawson.

Team Kitty rant....

Team Kitty, who is incapable of posting on his own sent out this email to the league this week and I thought it was worthwhile posting (mostly b/c he's throwing down quite a few opinions that he should have to stand by :)

My former trading partners want nothing to do with me.  My players just are not in high demand.  I can't even give a Joey Harrington Jersey away.  Yet, you look at the standings
and power rankings and there we are. . . at pr near the top as usual.

SI's NFL Team Power Rankings

SI.com's Peter King published his first of many 'Power Rankings' for the upcoming NFL season.  Though its hard to argue with his predictions, particularly at this point, I have to say that Indy at #1 is a little off center and likely a nod to their super bowl title from last season.  The reality is San Diego and New England both improved themselves while Indy (which barely beat NE at home in the AFC Championship game) took a step back due to defections in free agency.

NFL Teams with Depth to Deal

NFL.com's Pat Kirwan considers some teams with depth that might be interested in dealing players prior to or during training camp.  There are some interesting kernel's in there but as usual football trades close to the season (or during) are far and few between because of the complexity in learning the respective new system in a short period of time.

NFL QB Team by Team Analysis

NFL.com's Michael Fabiano analyzed all 32 NFL team's Quarterback position for fantasy production.  He didn't go into as much detail as some may like but for the majority (AKA no keeper leagues) of fantasy leaguers it'll be a good overview by team.

Randy Moss fitting in with the Patriots

The Boston Globe reports Patriots HC Bill Belichick commented on WEEI about how WR Randy Moss has been fitting in with the team. "Randy has participated in everything. When we signed him, he had already had a couple previous commitments. He was scheduled to do most everything, but had a previous commitment and wasn't going to be able to participate in a couple of things we had scheduled because he had already made scheduling arrangements on his own. He moved some of those things around. He had a good spring in terms of learning our system, picking up some of the things we do in the passing game that are a little bit different from what he's done in the past in Oakland and Minnesota. I wouldn't want to single him out, because really, I think you could say the same about all of our new players, and our veteran players. Those guys worked hard this year, picked up some of the adjustments and changes we made in our system. ..."

NFL.com's AFC East Team's Fantasy Overview...

NFL.com's Michael Fabiano is publishing overviews of each division by team of their fantasy value including schedule strength (against run & pass) and listing of each team's top 5 fantasy performers.  I've listed the top 5 for each team below and the overall summaries are good.  Some of this is academic but for fantasy nuts, its worth diving into the details.  This is for the AFC East teams.

Tom Brady to Randy Moss, the Best Fantasy QB-WR Tandem?

I have seen several media outlets and even an owner in my own personal fantasy league touting the incredible things QB Tom Brady and WR Randy Moss will do together.  The owner in my keeper league, who by the way happens to control both Brady & Moss' rights, even threw out the claim that they would be the 'Top QB-WR tandem'.  On paper maybe they should be, I don't think anybody could debate the talent of Randy Moss or the consistency and greatness of Tom Brady.  But the best QB-WR tandem?

All I have to ask is can you name the last wide receiver under Bill Belicheck to score more than 6 TD's or have 1000 yards receiving in a season?

Randy Moss dealt to New England for a 4th round pick

Drew Bledsoe retires after 14 seasons

AP reports QB Drew Bledsoe retired Wednesday, ending a 14-season career in which he made two Super Bowls. The top overall pick by New England in the 1993 draft out of Washington State, the four-time Pro Bowl quarterback played for the Patriots, Buffalo Bills and Dallas Cowboys. He was a starter for all three teams, but ended up as a backup with the Cowboys.

Kelley Washington signs with New England Patriots

ESPN's Len Pasquarelli reports the New England Patriots on Monday reached a contract agreement with unrestricted free agent WR Kelley Washington, who played the first four seasons of his career with the Cincinnati Bengals. The deal can be for as many as five years, with a maximum value of $22 million, but is also structured so that it could be as short as just one season. Washington will receive a signing bonus of $300,000.

Donte Stallworth signs with the New England Patriots

ESPN's Michael Smith & Len Pasquarelli reports the New England Patriots have agreed to sign free-agent WR Donte Stallworth.   The deal, negotiated by agent Drew Rosenhaus, can be as brief as one season or as lengthy as six. However for the Patriots to retain Stallworth beyond the 2007 season, a year in which he will make $3.6 million in bonuses and salary, New England will have to make a significant investment.

Daniel Graham - Highest Paid TE in the NFL

NFL.com and ESPN are reporting the Denver Broncos have reached an agreement with TE Daniel Graham on a five-year, $30 million contract that includes $15 million guaranteed. The deal makes Graham the highest-paid tight end in the NFL.  Graham was heavily pursued by the Seattle Seahawks as well but ultimately the opportunity to go home & the guaranteed dollars the Broncos offered him were too great.  Graham's father played for the team in the 70's, he grew up in Denver and attended the University of Colorado.

Peter King's Monday Morning QB Analysis of the Adalius Thomas Contract

SI's Peter King in his weekly column, Monday Morning Quarterback, does a nice job breaking down the Adalius Thomas negotiations, and in the process explaining why it was a good fit for Thomas and the Patriots.  What he uncovers is that the 49'ers were a legitimate option because of Thomas' relationship with their head coach Mike Nolan but that in the end he didn't want to leave the East Coast.

Randy Moss maybe in Patriots plans?

According to the Boston Herald, the New England Patriots have shown interest in dealing for WR Randy Moss. A source said Bill Belichick believes he could motivate Moss to play and that the veteran leadership on the team would keep the controversial WR in check.

Patriots Sign LB Adalius Thomas

The NE Patriots signed LB Adalius Thomas, universally rated as the #2 overall free agent behind Nate Clements.  The 2006 pro bowler is versatile and fits Bill Belicheck's system.  What's interesting is that ESPN is reporting the agreement is for 5 years $37.5 million with approximately $17 million guaranteed.  Prior to Friday, that would be considered a nice contract but after all the massive agreements this year, it seems Thomas signed for much less than he could have received if he had waited another day or two.  Patriots fans can chaulk this up to the system and winning attitude....

Patriots sign RFA WR Wes Welker to Huge Offer Sheet

According to the NFL Network Adam Schefter, the New England Patriots have signed Miami restricted free-agent WR Wes Welker to a seven-year offers sheet worth $38.5 million. Once Welker signs the offer sheet, the Dolphins will have seven days to match it. If they decide not to, they would get the Patriots' second-round draft pick.  Welker would presumably be a replacement for veteran Troy Brown and fill an all purpose role as a kick returner and slot receiver.

Patriots sign RB Sammy Morris

ESPN is reporting the NE Patriots have signed veteran RB Sammy Morris.  Morris likely will backup 2nd year player Laurence Maroney and provide the team experience at the position.  Expect Morris to be a change of pace option & primary backup to Maroney, while veteran Kevin Faulk remains the 3rd down guy in New England.

Corey Dillon to be Released...

The New England Patriots RB Corey Dillon has asked for and apparently will be granted his release.   Dillon was quoted in the Boston Globe saying he was planning to retire before his body forced him to leave.  However his agent was saying he's open to speaking to other teams about Dillon's services because he wants to be a featured back.

Pats release WR Doug Gabriel...

The New England Patriots released WR Doug Gabriel on Tuesday leaving them with four WR's on their roster, only three of which are healthy.  Gabriel was acquired from the Oakland Raiders prior to the NFL season for what was described as a 4th round selection and quickly developed into the Patriots most productive WR thru the first 8 weeks of the season with 24 catches for 355 yards & 3 TD's.  However a lost fumble in week #9 versus the NY Jets which ultimately led to a loss for Bill Belicheck against his new nemesis and former New England DC Eric Mangini.

Morning Game Observations

Observations from NFL Week 10 Morning games.

Green Bay Packers beat the Minnesota Vikings 23-17 -

  • QB B. Favre - he put up a strong effort against a tough defense with 2 td's & 330+ yards.
  • WR D. Driver had (or was close to) a career day w/ 190+ yards receiving & a 82 yard TD
  • RB A. Green didn't do much against the NFL's top run defense rushing for 55 yards on 22 carries
  • QB B. Johnson had a better day coming off back to back poor performances, throwing for 257 yards & a 40 yard TD pass.  However he did throw a pick and lost a fumble continuing a trend that will likely result in Brad Childress making a switch in the next week or two.
  • RB Chester Taylor had a workmanlike 75 yards on the ground and 20 yard receiving but didn't score.
  • Minnesota WR's again were inconsistent w/ newcomers Bethel Johnson w/ 75 yards & Billy McMullen surprising with 60 yards & a TD (40)

Deion Branch a Seahawk...

The Seattle Seahawks acquired WR Deion Branch from the New England Patriots for a 1st round selection in 2007.  Seattle will sign Branch to a reported 6 year $39 million contract with $13 million in guarantees and $23 million over the first 3 seasons.

This is a relatively big NFL trade during the season, a rarity, in particular for a player of Branch's caliber.

Laurence Maroney, Shanahan's Favorite RB

According to multiple sources, Denver Broncos head coach Mike Shanahan believes New England Patriots rookie RB Laurence Maroney is the best running back in the 2006 NFL draft and will be great for years to come. The sources you ask, one is from SI's Peter King who wrote about it this morning in his Tuesday Morning's Column.
The other is from a fellow PAFFL member who ran into him last night in Mexico on vacation, where according to him, Shanahan couldn't stop raving about Maroney.

For fantasy leaguers, Shanahan's word on running backs has been fact. Ok so he called Kevan Barlow a great back when he came out of college but that's not really a bust. Ok so he did waste a 3rd round pick on Maurice Clarett last year. But don't forget this guy selected Terrell Davis in the 6th round, Mike Anderson in the 7th, Olandis Gary in the 4th, Clinton Portis in the 2nd and most recently Tatum Bell in the 2nd. All of those guys except Bell have had a 1000 yard season, and Davis, Anderson & Portis have all put 1500 yard seasons and been all pro's in separate seasons. So his word generally stands for a lot. Unfortunately for fantasy leaguers, Maroney will share carries at best in '06. If you're in a keeper league, he is a good candidate to take on an expanded role if not carry the load in '07 for New England.
