I love the NFL draft because it creates some clarity for team depth charts and most importantly brings new talent into the league. This year, thanks to the lockout, the draft takes on more importance than any other over the past 24 years I've been following the draft, because there's been no free agency or trades, thus resulting in NFL teams applying need based selections more than I can remember in past drafts.

With the news that Stanford junior (sophomore in terms of athletic eligibility) QB Andrew Luck will stay at in school for another year to graduate, twitter is blowing up with negative reactions. First, we need to remember that its noble for a student to actually want to graduate from college. Too many people forget that college football (or basketball) is actually COLLEGE and that these student athletes are actually STUDENTS.

The Fightin' Irie were busy this morning, completing two separate deals, one a minor money deal, the other a pretty major blockbuster that in my opinion changes the balance of power a bit for '10 but puts Irie in a nice position for '11 if Scott and/or Harrison develop.

It's a quick look as the NFL Draft's first day starts to wind down on who the top fantasy rookies will be, specifically for the PAFFL (where long-term success is just as important as short term). I'll update this as the 3rd round is completed but at this point here are the top guys based on talent & situation.

Another former tradition that I've gotten away from is highlighting some of the great contracts in the PAFFL. This historically was to highlight the new deals but I think its important to showcase the best deals regardless of what year they were put on as long as they carry the same characteristic which is high production per dollar cost value. Thus the stars at more than $55 (at QB & RB or $35+ at WR) won't be on this list unless they're way out pacing LT's '06 or Brady's '07 production, which nobody is coming close to this year.
