2008 NFL Rookie Values Redux

Ok, I did this right after the NFL draft in April but following OTA's & mini-camps, and the stupidity of veterans (such as Cedric Benson) a lot has changed since then.  So I wanted to take another pass at this.

Week 10 Waiver Wire / Free Agent Pickups

Each week I attempt to compile a diverse list of potential Waiver Wire / Free Agent pickups for week 10 of the NFL season.  I play in a 16 team league where we start 9 players (no defense, only 1 kicker) so we're always looking for that #3 QB or RB who emerges to be the final piece on a playoff run.

Funny Bill Maas site

This site was started well before the recent arrest of Fox NFL color guy and fomer lineman Bill Maas.  Pretty hilarious stuff if you can wade through all the spam in the comments section.  His on-air behavior makes more sense after the Hunter S Thompson style buffet of drugs was discovered in a police search that was consented to (dumber move?  Can I get some legal advice on this move?  Kitty?  Short Bus?).  Quite a downfall to after getting the top spot in the 2000 Dr. Z's annual announcer awards.

BTW, some more photos and stats on passenger and live-in girlfriend Sarah J. Murphy, 27??

NFL QB Team by Team Analysis

NFL.com's Michael Fabiano analyzed all 32 NFL team's Quarterback position for fantasy production.  He didn't go into as much detail as some may like but for the majority (AKA no keeper leagues) of fantasy leaguers it'll be a good overview by team.

KC's QB Brodie Croyle may start in '07

According to CBS Sportsline Kansas City Chiefs starting quarterback in 2007 maybe second year pro Brodie Croyle.  Reports from this past weekend's mini-camp said Croyle looked good, and many other reports claim GM Carl Peterson & HC Herman Edwards prefer to turn the team over to the younger player, even over the veteran Damon Huard who led the team to the brink of the playoffs last year.  It is clear veteran Trent Green will be shown the door, its just a matter of time before the Dolphins & Chiefs come to terms on an agreement.

NFL.com's AFC West Team's Fantasy Overview...

NFL.com's Michael Fabiano is publishing overviews of each division by team of their fantasy value including schedule strength (against run & pass) and listing of each team's top 5 fantasy performers.  I've listed the top 5 for each team below and the overall summaries are good.  Some of this is academic but for fantasy nuts, its worth diving into the details.  This is for the AFC West

Trent Green to remain in KC?

In a battle of wills between the Kansas City Chiefs general manager, Carl Peterson, Trent Green and the Miami Dolphins has taken a step backwards.  On Tuesday Peterson said Green could stay with KC and be their starter in 2007.  But just about everybody senses that head coach Herman Edwards wants to go with 2nd year man Brodie Croyle or veteran Damon Huard, plus its unclear whether the Chiefs can handle Green's $7.2 million salary for 2007.  So Peterson is bluffing to get some value out of the Dolphins for Green.

RB Kolby Smith, #148 Overall Pick, Kansas City Chiefs

Kansas City Chiefs selected Louisville RB Kolby Smith with the #148 overall selection (#10 pick in the 5th round) in the 2007 NFL draft.  Smith, a college career backup, got his chance last season when the starter Michael Bush broke his leg in the opener.  He ended up being named a 2nd team all Big East Conference selection while helping the team to ten plus wins.  He's a deep sleeper but could surprise as a backup to Larr Johnson.

WR Dwayne Bowe, #23 Overall Pick, Kansas City Chiefs

Kansas City Chiefs have selected LSU WR Dwayne Bowe with the #23 overall selection in the 2007 NFL draft.  Bowe is a large, physical receiver with good game speed and no glaring weaknesses.  However it will take him a year to get acclimated to the NFL game and the Chiefs time to recognize Bowe's talent.

Daunte Hall dealt to the Rams

ESPN reports the Kansas City Chiefs have traded WR/KR Dante Hall to the St. Louis Rams for the Rams' fifth-round pick in 2007 NFL Draft.  The Kansas City Star adds the teams also swapped picks in the third round. The Chiefs will move up two spots in the round.  Hall is a very productive special teams player but is only a slot receiver at best from the line of scrimmage.

Trent Green Going to Miami?

The Palm Beach Post reports a new contract for QB Trent Green is holding up a possible deal that would send the former Pro Bowl quarterback from Kansas City to the Dolphins, sources said Wednesday. The Dolphins, like the Chiefs, want Green to take a major pay cut from the $7.2, $7.7 and $9.2 million the 36-year-old veteran is due over the next three seasons - the final three years on his current contract. Miami doesn't want to pay Green, who will turn 37 in July, much more than the NFL veteran's minimum, which is $820,000 in 2007. To acquire Green, the Dolphins likely would trade the second seventh-round draft pick they obtained from New England for WR Wes Welker.

KC QB Job Open Competition

The Kansas City Chiefs official website published a Q & A session with Chiefs HC Herman Edwards who said that the Quarterback position will be an open competition for 2007.  “It’s going to be open for competition and that’s what’s good about it. If QB Trent Green decides to come back, it’s going to be the same three guys and they are going to compete. You have to leave it at that; let them compete for the position and see who wins out.” Edwards said.

Michael Bennett to receive 100+ carries in 2007

The Kansas City Chiefs official website reports there is a number of carries that Chiefs HC Herman Edwards would like RB Michael Bennett to get in 2007. “We ran the ball almost 500 times last year. At the end of the day, you’re talking about at least 100 carries with the balls in his hands. That’s how it should work and that’s what Lamont was able to do in New York. He took a lot of the load off of Curtis.”

Tony G Signs Big Extension to Stay in KC

The Kansas City Chiefs resigned all pro TE Tony Gonzales to a five year extension, likely resulting in him playing all or at least most of his career with the Kansas City Chiefs.  Terms of the deal were not disclosed but its believed to be for more than $31MM with $17MM guaranteed.  Gonzales hasn't been a fantasy stud the past few seasons and at 31 years of age his best years maybe behind him.
