2008 NFL Rookie Values Redux

Ok, I did this right after the NFL draft in April but following OTA's & mini-camps, and the stupidity of veterans (such as Cedric Benson) a lot has changed since then.  So I wanted to take another pass at this.

RB Share Situations - New Blood from the 2008 NFL Draft

The NFL draft always brings some surprises but one guarantee you can always count on is new blood, an infusion of 250+ players who are young, healthy and hungry to make it in the NFL.  In a professional sport that carries a career expectancy of approximately 3.2 years for a drafted player, many joke that NFL stands for 'Not For Long'.  For fantasy leaguers, particularly dynasty league participants (where you keep players for longer than a single year), the NFL draft represents new blood, players who shift current player's values and new opportunities for fantasy success.  One trend that people will start talking about a lot more, and expect to see this all over the 2008 fantasy football guides that get published in June, is the NFL shift to Two Back systems where one running back maybe gets a majority of the carries between the 20's and then another one comes in for the goal line work, short yardage or third down opportunities.  The NY Giants won the super bowl with this strategy, and New England has employed it during their reign the past eight years to great success. So while having competent backups has always been the goal, the NFL is moving towards a trend of literally have two guys who could be considered the starter.  For fantasy this means fewer true 'featured backs' and more ambiguity as to who is the 'right' guy to start week to week.

Brett Favre for Cedric Benson, Joey Harrington, Jake Delhomme and a future pick

Looking to make deals

I know I always believe I have an obscene amount of talent but sense I scout and spend more time on this than most people, in the PAFFL and in general, I typically end up having success both with players I keep and deal.  This year I've been very quiet (I suspect just about all of you know since I've gone from sending emails about deal ideas weekly, sometimes daily, to eerily silent) due to workload on both my primary job and side passions like FFCollective, TheWino.net and this site.

Is Tony Romo pulling a Rex Grossman?

Dallas Cowboys QB Tony Romo's first half stat line in tonight's Monday Night Football game is 8 for 16 for 99 passing yards 1 TD but 4 interceptions, 2 of which were returned for TD's.  That's Rex Grossman in his prime.  Now clearly there has been some bad luck but in the PAFFL league its actually made a game that appeared to be done into, well, a game.  East Bay Funk entered tonights' game with the Dallas K NIck Folk and Buffalo WR Lee Evans down 11 against Ron Jeremy Fanclub who had the Dallas QB Romo, take the negative 2 points for each pick returned for a TD and it's actually a tied game at half time - with no contribution from Evans and little from Folk.

passes for 286 yards and two touchdowns in Week 4 whle also
throwing three interceptions in the Bears 37-27 loss to the Detroit
Lions.

QB's Who Are Feeling the Pressure

Another good fantasy related post from our friends at SportProjections.com, this one is the starting NFL QB's who are likely feeling the most pressure to perform in 2007.  Funny how Rex Grossman finds himself on every one of these lists, but then again he deserves it for having the most lopsided performances in a single NFL season of all-time.

2007 Comeback Players...

NFL.com's Vic Carucci published his list of top stars entering 2007 looking to rebound or 'Comeback' from injuries or poor performances in '06.  The list includes stars who literally missed much of '06 like the Jags QB Byron Leftwich to guys like the Bears QB Rex Grossman who simply need to prove they can be professional starting QB's.

Donovan McNabb in Chicago?

Philadelphia Eagles QB Donovan McNabb, a native Chicagoan, would seriously consider donning a Bears uniform if the opportunity presented itself down the road according to ProFootballWeekly. McNabb has had an uneven relationship with the Eagles, and it was further complicated by the team’s 2nd round selection of QB Kevin Kolb in the 2007 draft.

NFL QB Team by Team Analysis

NFL.com's Michael Fabiano analyzed all 32 NFL team's Quarterback position for fantasy production.  He didn't go into as much detail as some may like but for the majority (AKA no keeper leagues) of fantasy leaguers it'll be a good overview by team.

McNabb to be traded to Chicago before '07 Season?

I had to post this b/c its so far out there that I wanted to point out how crazy it truly is.  The article appeared in the Philadelphia Inquirer this past week proposing that since the Eagles drafted a QB in the 2nd round, Kevin Kolb, they likely could deal Donovan McNabb prior to the start of the 2007 season.  Their theory was that Chicago could trade disgruntled LB Lance Briggs for QB Donovan McNabb.

Lovie Smith is 'Excited' with Rex Grossman

The Chicago Sun Times reports Bears QB Rex Grossman remains the team's starter for 2007 with QB Brian Griese backing him up. QB Kyle Orton is No. 3 quarterback, and undrafted rookie QB Chris Leak is No. 4, at least until QB J.T. O'Sullivan returns from NFL Europa. "I feel very good about the position like I always have about Rex Grossman," HC Lovie Smith said. "I'm excited about Rex being in the system, being the starter for a second year in a row. Normally, there's a big gain from the first to second year. That's what we're expecting out of Rex."

RB Garrett Wolfe, #93 Overall Pick, Chicago Bears

Chicago Bears selected local product, Northern Illinois RB Garrett Wolfe with the #93 overall selection (#30 in the 3rd round) in the 2007 NFL draft.  Wolfe is an undersized, scat-back type of runner who was very productive in college leading division one in rushing last year (1800 yards).  Wolfe will provide the speed, change of pace element to counter Cedric Benson's power.

TE Greg Olsen, #31 Overall Pick, Chicago Bears

Chicago Bears selected University of Miami TE Greg Olsen with the #31 overall selection in the 2007 NFL draft.  Olsen shocked the scouting combine running the 40 in one of the all-time record times for a TE (4.5) to pair with his known athleticism and pass catching ability.  This will provide Chicago another offensive weapon to spread the ball around.

WR Robert Meachem, #27 Overall Pick, New Orleans Saints

New Orleans Saints selected Tennessee WR Robert Meachem with the #27th overall selection in the 2007 NFL draft.  Meachem is a potential #1 receiver who has good size, speed and run after the catch ability; and is a bit underrated due to playing for a subpar University of Tennessee team.

WR Justin Gage signs with the Tennessee Titans

ESPN's Len Pasquarelli reports the Tennessee Titans have signed unrestricted free agent WR Justin Gage, a four-year veteran who had spent his entire career with the Chicago Bears. A fifth-round choice in the 2003 draft, Gage has appeared in 49 games and started 16 of them. The former Missouri standout has 64 receptions for 908 yards and four touchdowns. Contract details were not immediately available.

Thomas Jones traded to the NY Jets

Chicago's Lovie Smith, Jerry Angelo sign contract extensions

Chicago Bears Starting QB?

Chicago's signing of veteran QB Brian Griese to a five year agreement opens up an interesting quarterback dilemna for fantasy leaguers & the Chicago Bears. The Bears coaching staff will likely say the right things, that Rex Grossman will enter training camp as the starter and Griese was brought in as insurance against another Grossman injury. But the reality is that Griese is an established veteran who has led teams to the playoffs and has a track record. The Bears defense is championship ready and the coaching staff knows that all it needs is a Trent Dilfer '00 Ravens type QB (essentially a QB who doesn't lose games) to take the next step in their quest for a Super Bowl. My opinion is they signed Griese with the intent to start him over Grossman but they can't come out and say it. Grossman has shown flashes of ability but nothing sustained and he's struggled to stay healthy for more than a couple games at a time. This won't be settled until training camp but the safe money is on the veteran with longshot money on 2nd year QB Kyle Orton, who will only improve on his conservative, albeit steady play as a rookie.
