Steve Smith for Randy Moss

The Fightin' Irie continue their torrid pace of reshaping their squad with another deal this morning with the unusually quiet but picking up steam Team Kitty.  But the highlight of the day was a one for one deal between the Naughty Thoughts & South Whore Jibbers

2008 NFL Rookie Values Redux

Ok, I did this right after the NFL draft in April but following OTA's & mini-camps, and the stupidity of veterans (such as Cedric Benson) a lot has changed since then.  So I wanted to take another pass at this.

RB Share Situations - New Blood from the 2008 NFL Draft

The NFL draft always brings some surprises but one guarantee you can always count on is new blood, an infusion of 250+ players who are young, healthy and hungry to make it in the NFL.  In a professional sport that carries a career expectancy of approximately 3.2 years for a drafted player, many joke that NFL stands for 'Not For Long'.  For fantasy leaguers, particularly dynasty league participants (where you keep players for longer than a single year), the NFL draft represents new blood, players who shift current player's values and new opportunities for fantasy success.  One trend that people will start talking about a lot more, and expect to see this all over the 2008 fantasy football guides that get published in June, is the NFL shift to Two Back systems where one running back maybe gets a majority of the carries between the 20's and then another one comes in for the goal line work, short yardage or third down opportunities.  The NY Giants won the super bowl with this strategy, and New England has employed it during their reign the past eight years to great success. So while having competent backups has always been the goal, the NFL is moving towards a trend of literally have two guys who could be considered the starter.  For fantasy this means fewer true 'featured backs' and more ambiguity as to who is the 'right' guy to start week to week.

Jake Delhomme held over for $55?

This was posted on the league's website this evening.  It's a fellow owner, Team Kitty, attempting to absolve him of potential league conflict over a 'shady' maneuver of dropping QB Jake Delhomme (who was in the last year of his long term contract - PAFFL contract that is, not Carolina Panthers contract), then picking him back up in a plan to resign him next year for $55.  Thus extending Delhomme's contract by another three years at his current salary.

Buy Low? How Low? Chris Simms Low! Chris Henry Low! Ricky Williams Low?

The rich get richer in fantasy leagues when they know how to snag a player on the heels of some (or a lot) of bad news.  In an educated league like ours, swooping in at the right time can be highly profitable.

2001 NFL Draft Recap....

The 2001 NFL draft brought some of the biggest stars to the league but surprisingly some of them were after the coveted first round.  LaDainian Tomlinson (#5 Overall) is far and away the prize of this draft but folks like Chad Johnson (2nd round), Steve Smith (3rd round) and TJ Houshmandzadeh (7th Round).  The full list is below and analysis can be found here at FBKids blog

Jarrett the No. 1 rookie WR in non-keeper drafts?

Carolina's Keyshawn Johnson was a solid spot-starter last year, w/800 yards and 5 total TDs.  He came pretty cheap at our draft and provided my team with much-needed WR depth.  Look for Dwayne Jarrett to walk right in and fill Keyshawn's role, which is what the team had in mind when it drafted Jarrett with the 45th overall pick and let Me-Shawn go (apologies to our Palo Alto schoolmate, Kristin Coleman, who is marrying Keyshawn, is rumored to be a key catalyst behind his decision to retire, and I'm sure is better at keeping his ego in check than most NFL coaches).

NFL QB Team by Team Analysis

NFL.com's Michael Fabiano analyzed all 32 NFL team's Quarterback position for fantasy production.  He didn't go into as much detail as some may like but for the majority (AKA no keeper leagues) of fantasy leaguers it'll be a good overview by team.

Drew Carter may start opposite Steve Smith in Carolina

The Gaston Gazette reports for Carolina Panthers fourth-year WR Drew Carter the one shot, that one opportunity to start is now. After missing all of his rookie season in 2004 with a knee injury, Carter has shown steady improve-ment over the last two seasons leaving Carolina’s front office, not to mention its fan base, buzzing with optimism over his long-term potential.

Keyshawn Johnson Released by Carolina

ESPN reports WR Keyshawn Johnson was released by the Carolina Panthers Tuesday, leaving one of the NFL's most productive receivers looking for a third team in as many years. "They said they wanted to get younger,'' Johnson said. ""That's fine with me. I'd like to go somewhere and help someone win another Super Bowl.''  Carolina drafted Southern Cal WR Dwayne Jarrett and also have WR Keary Colbert. Last season, Johnson caught 70 passes for 815 yards and four touchdowns, two of them against Tampa Bay. Johnson even joked that he would consider returning to the Bucs. "Me and Jon Gruden together again. You never know,'' he said laughing. ""Billy Martin and George Steinbrenner did it.''

WR Dwayne Jarrett, #45 Overall Pick, Carolina Panthers

Carolina Panthers selected USC WR Dwayne Jarrett with the #45 overall selection (#13 in the 2nd round) in the 2007 NFL draft.  Jarrett, the two time all american, has prototype size and production but he gets knocked for possibly being too big and slow to succeed on the NFL level.  My bet is Jarrett knocks the critics to be a solid but not spectacular, thirteen year vet in the NFL.

David Carr signs with Carolina

New Starting RB in Carolina?

ProFootballWeekly reported that new Carolina Panthers Offensive Coordinator, Jeff Davidson, isn't committed to either veteran RB DeShaun Foster or 2nd year man DeAngelo Williams as their featured back. Davidson told a group of reporters at the Combine that he is just beginning to evaluate the backfield personnel: “I’m comfortable, but until I see them in live action … I’m going to walk the fence on that one,” Davidson said.  Neither RB fits head coach John Fox' preferred power running game style, which is why speculation is running that they'll make an attempt to sign Corey Dillon or draft a back like Michael Bush to complement Williams and Foster.

Foster hurts elbow in Panthers win

Carolina Panthers starting RB DeShaun Foster hurt his elbow in today's win versus St. Louis and did not return to the game.  Foster had X-Rays after the game but the results are not yet known.  Foster carried 9 times for 63 yards before the injury.  Rookie backup DeAngelo Williams carried the ball 20 times for 114 yards in his place.
