Week 9 Waiver Wire / Free Agent Pickups

Below are a list of potentially valuable Waiver Wire / Free Agent pickups for week 9 of the NFL season.  Maybe some of these guys aren’t worth a damn in shallow leagues but what’s the fun in dropping Marvin Harrison b/c he’s out a week for a guy like Wes Welker who is available as the #3 receiver in New England.  Ok, Welker shouldn’t be available in ANY league format but you get the point.

Is Tony Romo pulling a Rex Grossman?

Dallas Cowboys QB Tony Romo's first half stat line in tonight's Monday Night Football game is 8 for 16 for 99 passing yards 1 TD but 4 interceptions, 2 of which were returned for TD's.  That's Rex Grossman in his prime.  Now clearly there has been some bad luck but in the PAFFL league its actually made a game that appeared to be done into, well, a game.  East Bay Funk entered tonights' game with the Dallas K NIck Folk and Buffalo WR Lee Evans down 11 against Ron Jeremy Fanclub who had the Dallas QB Romo, take the negative 2 points for each pick returned for a TD and it's actually a tied game at half time - with no contribution from Evans and little from Folk.

NFL QB Team by Team Analysis

NFL.com's Michael Fabiano analyzed all 32 NFL team's Quarterback position for fantasy production.  He didn't go into as much detail as some may like but for the majority (AKA no keeper leagues) of fantasy leaguers it'll be a good overview by team.

NFL.com's AFC East Team's Fantasy Overview...

NFL.com's Michael Fabiano is publishing overviews of each division by team of their fantasy value including schedule strength (against run & pass) and listing of each team's top 5 fantasy performers.  I've listed the top 5 for each team below and the overall summaries are good.  Some of this is academic but for fantasy nuts, its worth diving into the details.  This is for the AFC East teams.

RB Dwayne Wright, #111 Overall Pick, Buffalo Bills

Buffalo Bills selected Fresno State RB Dwayne Wright with the #111 overall selection (#12 in the 4th round) in the 2007 NFL draft.  Wright is a good sized back with adequate speed who was very productive on a subpar Fresno State team.  Lee Higgins is a fast, lean receiver who can make the big play.  Scouts question whether he'll be able to handle the physicality of the NFL and learn to run crisp routes, the Raiders obviously liked his speed and believe he'll contribute to the vertical passing game they hope to institute with new QB JaMarcus Russell.

QB Trent Edwards, #92 Overall Pick, Buffalo Bills

Buffalo Bills selected Stanford QB Trent Edwards with the #92 overall selection (#29 in the 3rd round) in the 2007 NFL draft. Edwards was one of the most highly recruited QB's out of high school (along with Vince Young) but he joined an undermanned Stanford team that won only 10 games in his 31 starts.  He is athletic, has a good arm but he didn't show the leadership necessary to drive the Cardinal to respectability.   Edwards has potential to be an NFL starter but he'll be a developmental player for at least the next season.

RB Marshawn Lynch, #12 Overall Pick, Buffalo Bills

Buffalo Bills selected California RB Marshawn Lynch with the #12 overall selection in the 2007 NFL draft.  Lynch was the Pac-10 Offensive Player of the Year & named an All-American in 2006; he is a complete back who can line up at tailback, in the slot or spread wide.  As one scout said, Lynch is a 'poor man's Marshall Faulk'.  This will be a good selection for Buffalo as they look to replace Willis McGahee.

Willis McGahee dealt to Balitmore

ESPN's Michael Smith reports the Baltimore Ravens and Buffalo Bills agreed to a trade Thursday that will send RB Willis McGahee to Baltimore in exchange for the team's third and seventh-round picks in this year's draft, along with the Ravens' third-round pick in 2008, league sources said.  A day after the Ravens lost RB Jamel Lewis to division rival Cleveland, they acquired a younger back who has the potential to be an upgrade.  In addition, the Baltimore Ravens have reached agreement on a new seven-year, $40.12 million contract that includes $15 million in bonuses. McGahee's base salaries in the seven years of the contract are $595,000, $605,000, $620,000, $3.6 million, $6 million, $6.5 million, and $7.2 million.
