2008 NFL Rookie Values Redux

Ok, I did this right after the NFL draft in April but following OTA's & mini-camps, and the stupidity of veterans (such as Cedric Benson) a lot has changed since then.  So I wanted to take another pass at this.

Is there an NFL conspiracy for the Patriots?

Following Monday Night's game between the Baltimore Ravens and the New England Patriots, there are allegations about a possible NFL conspiracy to aid the Pats in their quest for an undefeated season.  While many of the allegations are coming off as sour grapes from disgruntled and frustrated Ravens defensive players, its an interesting topic.

Subtract McNair & the Ravens Romp!

If the Baltimore Ravens just had benched Steve McNair prior to tonight's game with the Cincinnati Bengals, they would have blown out the hometown team.  He has 3 fumbles lost & an interception which directly resulted in 24 of the Bengals points tonight.

NFL QB Team by Team Analysis

NFL.com's Michael Fabiano analyzed all 32 NFL team's Quarterback position for fantasy production.  He didn't go into as much detail as some may like but for the majority (AKA no keeper leagues) of fantasy leaguers it'll be a good overview by team.

Willis McGahee will provide Ravens with a spread offense

ESPN's John Clayton reports Baltimore Ravens RB Willis McGahee will give HC Brian Billick the ability to spread the field. The transition begins in training camp. Even though McGahee caught only 18 passes last year, he is expected to be more of pass-receiving presence than Lewis. The change is perfect for McGahee. He's ideal in a one-back set.

NFL.com's AFC North Team's Fantasy Overview...

NFL.com's Michael Fabiano is publishing overviews of each division by team of their fantasy value including schedule strength (against run & pass) and listing of each team's top 5 fantasy performers.  I've listed the top 5 for each team below and the overall summaries are good.  Some of this is academic but for fantasy nuts, its worth diving into the details.  This is for the AFC North.

Steve McNair arressted for DUI as a passenger?

ESPN reported Baltimore Ravens starting QB Steve McNair was arrested on driving under the influence charges late Wednesday in Nashville, police said this morning. McNair was a passenger in his vehicle driven by a man identified as his brother-in-law, Capt. Richard Foley said.
Chalk this one up under, "Subjective laws to fuck with innocent people", since when did traveling with a inebriated driver result in passengers getting a DUI, don't you need to be drinking & DRIVING?

QB Troy Smith, #174 Overall Pick, Baltimore Ravens

Baltimore Ravens selected Ohio State QB Troy Smith with the #174 overall selection (#37 & last pick in the 5th round) in the 2007 NFL draft. Smith, the 2006 Heisman trophy winner, fell this far for two reasons, he looked lost in the national championship game versus Florida's speed and he measured in at around six feet, a kiss of death among NFL scouts for a quarterback.  Baltimore is a great spot for Smith, he will get to learn behind Steve McNair and won't have the pressure of a day one pick.

WR Yamon Figurs, #74 Overall Pick, Baltimore Ravens

Baltimore Ravens selected Kansas State WR Yamon Figurs with the #74 overall selection (#10 in the 3rd round) in the 2007 NFL draft. Figurs was one of the fastest prospects at the Scouting Combine and will be a good addition as a return specialist and slot receiver, think a 2007 version of former Raven Jermaine Lewis.

Willis McGahee dealt to Balitmore

ESPN's Michael Smith reports the Baltimore Ravens and Buffalo Bills agreed to a trade Thursday that will send RB Willis McGahee to Baltimore in exchange for the team's third and seventh-round picks in this year's draft, along with the Ravens' third-round pick in 2008, league sources said.  A day after the Ravens lost RB Jamel Lewis to division rival Cleveland, they acquired a younger back who has the potential to be an upgrade.  In addition, the Baltimore Ravens have reached agreement on a new seven-year, $40.12 million contract that includes $15 million in bonuses. McGahee's base salaries in the seven years of the contract are $595,000, $605,000, $620,000, $3.6 million, $6 million, $6.5 million, and $7.2 million.

Falcons sign Ovie Mughelli to largest FB deal ever

The Atlanta Falcons official website reports the Falcons have signed free-agent FB Ovie Mughelli (Ravens).  ESPN's John Clayton adds the contract is a six-year, $18 million deal that included a $5 million signing bonus.  This signifies that the Falcons will focus on a power running game, likely meaning the end of Justin Griffith's tenure in Atlanta and signaling a lighter load for the smaller Warrick Dunn in 2007.

Morning Game Observations

Observations from NFL Week 10 Morning games.

Green Bay Packers beat the Minnesota Vikings 23-17 -

  • QB B. Favre - he put up a strong effort against a tough defense with 2 td's & 330+ yards.
  • WR D. Driver had (or was close to) a career day w/ 190+ yards receiving & a 82 yard TD
  • RB A. Green didn't do much against the NFL's top run defense rushing for 55 yards on 22 carries
  • QB B. Johnson had a better day coming off back to back poor performances, throwing for 257 yards & a 40 yard TD pass.  However he did throw a pick and lost a fumble continuing a trend that will likely result in Brad Childress making a switch in the next week or two.
  • RB Chester Taylor had a workmanlike 75 yards on the ground and 20 yard receiving but didn't score.
  • Minnesota WR's again were inconsistent w/ newcomers Bethel Johnson w/ 75 yards & Billy McMullen surprising with 60 yards & a TD (40)
