In arguably the biggest deal of the 2009 PAFFL season, Fuego and The Beavercats exchanged a lot of big names.
Fuego trades TE Antonio Gates ($41, '09), RB Peyton Hillis ($3, '11), RB Brandon Jacobs ($55, '10) $2 in '09 cap and QB Carson Palmer ($80, '09) to The Beavercats for QB Nate Davis ($10, '12), TE Tony Gonzalez, QB Matt Hasselbeck and RB Darren Sproles ($1, '10).
Analysis: This deal's evaluation will be determined by Nate Davis and to a lesser extent Darren Sproles (who has been top 25 fantasy RB scorer in '09). The Beavercats upgrade some at QB (Hasselbeck has avg. the same per game averages as Palmer but he's missed 3 games), a tiny bit at TE (Gates has scored 1 more fantasy point than TG but locked in toppers in '10 is a plus) but they give up an actually more productive RB (Sproles has average a half point more per game in '10 than Jacobs) and take a big salary hit.
Averages can be deceiving - there's really no comparison between sproles and Jacobs. Unless Davis is a starter, which is a big IF, this trade is clearly one-sided IMO. The biggest trade of the year has the potential to be the most lopsided.

Jacobs - 1 game with less than 3 fantasy points
Sproles - 6 games with less than 3 fantasy points

Agreed on the averages although generally I'd rather have the blow up games that win me weeks than a slow steady average from my #3 RB - which Sproles/Jacobs have been for both teams. Either way its a toss up in terms of production but a $54 difference in salary in '10 makes this clear cut.

amazing.
a career backup (sproles) gets traded for a starter and its justified by a difference in salary.
its clear how you justified the deal (its in the article and your response).
i just happen to think your analysis is flawed (maybe spinned is the better word) for several reasons.
here's a couple:
Jacobs has 6 games with 15+ carries (averages 16 carries, and 1 reception a game) and hes not filling in for any injured player IN FACT, HE'S THE STARTER (jacobs 160 carries, bradshaw 115)
Sproles has 1 game with 15+ carries, WHILE FILLING IN FOR AN INJURED LT (avg. 6 carries, and 3 receptions a game for the year) he's better off described as a wr. HE'S A BACKUP
3 year avg. (average fantasy points per year)
jacobs: 107 fantasy points per year
hillis: 55 fp per year
sproles: 42 fp/year
sproles filled in for an injured LT, padded his stats, and gets traded for a rb whose been in the top 20 the last 3 YEARS.
this is why, IMO, the deal hinges on a QB who hasn't even sniffed the field.
if, generally you prefer a rb who might blow up once in a while (when the starter in front of him is injured) why did you take on $45 in salary and a more consistent, proven RB in Jacobs?
amazing.
i hope fuego uses the $45 wisely.

not only that, you go from no toppers on hasselbeck and gonzo to autotoppers on palmer and gates
PLUS you got $2 in '09 cash
amazing deal for salem, IMO

Vic is right. Very lopsided deal.

Agreed. Way lopsided. I called Team Kitty immediately after the deal was announced to chastise him for not keeping his boy in line. New owners need to check in with their sponsors before making big deals like this. I wonder what the Firefighters owner would say if he learned that the Beavercats had gotten both of his QB's. At least the trade for Manning last year seemed fair (Fuego got Mendenhall and Ryan Grant but can't quite remember what else was traded).

I won't even mention Jacobs DVOA & DYAR the last 2 years

What blows me away was the $2 in '09!! Seriously, how did that even come into the deal given how the scales tip?

TE Antonio Gates ($41, '09) for TE Tony Gonzalez – winner SB due to autotoppers
RB Peyton Hillis ($3, '11) for QB Nate Davis ($10, '12) – winner SB as Hillis has played in an NFL game.
RB Brandon Jacobs ($55, '10) for RB Darren Sproles ($1, '10) – winner SB (see EBF post)
QB Carson Palmer ($80, '09) for QB Matt Hasselbeck - winner SB due to autotoppers, and more production
$2 in '09 cap….priceless

Let's cut the new owners some slack. PAFFL learning curve. Strongs traded Chris Johnson and Fuego traded debateable assets for Sproles. Let's trade Firkin a stud WR while we're at it.

I'm sorry... but if i'm a new GM in the shark-filled waters of the PAFFL, I'm going to check with at least two owners on every trade offer I get, especially from Wetzel, Weaver, Pat, or myself.

I like the Strongs trade of CJ to EBF for 2 stud RB's. In terms of straight production this year, that was a great trade for the Strongs heading into the stretch run.

How do you figure? Points for CJ since week 8 = approx 130. Points for LT AND DW approx 120. Plus he's using two roster spots to score less points. And factor in a much lower salary next year than LT and DW combined and it was a great deal for EBF.

i dont think anyone could have predicted the streak Chris Johnson has been on.
especially at the time of our trade and given his first 6 weeks ( 3, 51, 6, 6, 2, 8)
in hindsight, the deal obviously worked out it my favor. which i am very pleased with - Matern ripped me off in our first deal.

Marty predicted his badassness at the draft a couple years back!!!

Yeah, well, now especially after last week it looks like a stupid trade. At the time I wrote though it was essentially a toss up in terms of production since the trade. Johnson has been a beast and we should kick the new owner out for making such a stupid trade. He still would have lost in the first round though CJ or no CJ.
