Happy Belated 4th of July! We’re less than a month out from the ’09 PAFFL auction, our 22nd year of fantasy football competition. This year brings some changes, gone are the former auction format (by position & team) to a more open draft style auction selection, gone is a long-time owner (Jonah), in are effectively three new owners (BINGO from Blak Jesus; En Fuego from the Firefighters; & the yet to be determined new owner for Ron Jeremy – who has chosen to be part of the Firkin Crawlers ownership group).
Change is a good thing, its how the PAFFL has evolved, growing the level of competition & fun, into what has gone beyond simply watching games on Sunday’s to a near year round quest to build your squad. From my vantage point we have more committed owners than ever before, the league competition has never seen so strong, and the auction weekend has become an annual destination weekend. We just have to remembers that its a game; what started in high school and kept us connected in college, has become a thread that binds us together.
I’m fired up for the upcoming season, it promises to be another great
one with league wide parity and new blood pushing the PAFFL to new limits.
Auction Weekend: The auction weekend is the last one in July, 30 -
August 2. The Thursday night we’re all welcome at the beach house,
Chad has volunteered to throw a bbq at his house that Thursday (its
about a 15 minute drive to Monterey Dunes from his place). The next
day, Friday, at around 8PM, we’ll hold the annual rookie draft. Then
the following morning at 11 the auction itself will start.
Rule Changes:
• Auction Format - Rule changes for ’09 were limited but there is
one huge one. Beginning this season, the auction format will be held
in a draft style where each owner gets a pick (order will be determined
right before the auction start by each owner selecting a number from a
hat), that snakes back around. Any player currently heading into their
final contractual season will be able to be “opened up” prior to the
official auction start. Following each 4 complete cycles thru the
sixteen teams, we’ll have a fifteen (15) minute break. Any player
that has not been named maybe selected, however any selection named
starts out at $1 for the selecting team, thus the bidding starts at
$2.
• In-Auction Trades – Starting this year, no trades maybe announced
during an auction round. They must be consummated prior to the
auction, during a defined auction break or following the auction.
For a list of the most recent discussion & initiatives we’ll address at the auction, check them out here.
New Owner: The great thing about the selection process for a new owner was we found a handful of very good candidates, in particular two that would be great additions. The hard part is one of these folks won't get selected. The new owner vote is still very close, with a current 7 to 4 vote. It can’t become official until at least one owner has 8 votes or a total of twelve teams total have voted. We’re still waiting for votes from BINGO, Pomona Stoned Hens, IMT & LFP. Please send me your vote ASAP so we can finalize this.
