In what was really two different deals put together in one, IMT & the Beavercats have completed a fun, 21st century style PAFFL trade.
IMT acquires an unconditional 2009 cut, QB J.P. Losman ($6, '11), QB Brodie Croyle ($25, '09), the #11 & #16 2009 Rookie PIcks from the Beavercats for the rights to RB Laurence Maroney ($55, '08), $10 in '09 and their '10 Rookie Pick with stipulations. The stipulations are that the '10 pick is protected against a top 2 selection (if it falls into the top two, the pick would be pushed to '11) & if the pick falls between 3-5 in '10, the Beavercats pay IMT $5.
The first part of the deal, Losman, Croyle & a cut for Laurence Maroney's rights was agreed to a week ago. Then we started to discuss the larger opportunity that included the rookie picks, which essentially is a two for one & $10 this year for that trade off. The Beavercats had two other potential deals on the table for the two picks, both of which were similar in nature but either included rights to players and/or different types of $. So we were able to finalize yesterday and complete the deal.
Analysis: For IMT, they get to cut Drew Stanton ($41) who is dead weight but take on the one year waste ($25) of Brodie Croyle, and add the potential / low cost of Losman to the mix. Overall its a salary dump for both teams with IMT getting more near term value and the Beavercats taking the long view on the deal. IMT is protected against a highly valuable rookie pick in '10.
Conclusion: Just like any deal, its impossible to declare a winner for at least another year when we know who the rookie picks become, where the IMT '10 pick ends up and whether Losman or Maroney end up having any fantasy value. If everybody performs as they have, and one of the rookie picks turns into a productive fantasy player (likely in that $20 range) and the '10 rookie pick ends up in that #5-#8 range, then it'll be a wash. But there are a lot of ifs in there and a lot can happen between now and then.
I can't speak for you all but I can't wait for training camps and the PAFFL auction in July!
