The first trade of the 2008 PAFFL season was consummated earlier this year between two of the league's most active traders, Team Kitty and the PA Short Bus.
Team Kitty acquired QB's Rex Grossman ($55, 2009) & Kyle Orton ($11, 2007) and the rights to WR Chad Johnson ($55, 2007) from the Short Bus for WR Larry Fitzgerald ($53, 2009)
This is a small move in the grand scheme of things but one I personally think goes to the Short Bus. They shed unwanted salary - anybody who has watched Chicago Bears football over the past two seasons (specifically Super Bowl 42 & any game in 2008) knows that Grossman is NOT a starting NFL quarterback. If he played for a team with an average defense this opinion would be universally shared by all pundits but b/c he's played behind one of the strongest defenses in a run heavy offense, he's still sitting around with an opportunity to start.
I think Orton will start more Chicago Bears games in 2008 than Grossman but that's why they play the games. On the flip side, I'm not convinced Fitzgerald will be more valuable fantasy contributor in 2008 than CJ, and Ocho Cinco will likely be 25% cheaper. So its kind of a wash in my opinion.
Thoughts?
I think that Chad Johnson is a $50 WR, although he might go for $40 in the draft. Depends on a lot of factors.
Fitzgerald is a more consistent scorer and I like the fact he's under contract already. I don't have the massive cap room to navigate (and risk) the purchase of a stud WR (like 85) at the draft. Weaver will do fine with this task.
Grossman and Orton might have more value than you suggest. If he can get Orton for $15 and he becomes the starter, he's got a solid deal for the next 3 years. Grossman is under contract for 2 more seasons, but we both know that Team Kitty can work their way around that issue.
This clears Grossman's contract ($55), Orton's suggested contract ($15), and 85's suggested contract ($45) for Larry Fitzgerald's contract ($53, although Weaver quoted me $52!), which is a savings of $60 this year AND next year.
I plan on putting that $60 toward Addai's resigning in 2009.
Brees/Schaub
Addai/AD/Lynch
Fitzgerald/Reggie Brown
It's coming together...
