The question was posed today, do the stud fantasy WR's Terrell Owens & Randy Moss make fantasy stud QB's Tony Romo & Tom Brady? Or vice versa? It's an interesting question and one you could argue either way but I think the answer is a pretty easy one. The quarterback makes the receiver, always has and always will. Tom Brady has been a top 5 fantasy quarterback for five consecutive years prior to Randy Moss' arrival in New England. And for those that don't remember, Moss is the same receiver who struggled to be even relevant to fantasy leaguers the past two years in Oakland.
The same can be said about Terrell Owens. He was a great player for San Francisco early but his last few years in a 49'er uniform were average at best as the team struggled at the QB position. Transplant him to Philadelphia and he averages 1 TD per game played over a two year stretch. Or for those that can go back that far, the 1981 San Francisco 49'ers were the first NFL team to win the Super Bowl without a single 1000 yard receiver or rusher, yet they had a top 5 offense that season. The reason was a strategic pass first system led by a young QB, Joe Montana, who spread the ball around regularly to 7 or 8 different receivers. As the 49'er system matured in the late 80's and 90's, it was clear that the system and QB were the ones making receiving stars and not the other way around.
So to fantasy leaguers who think its Randy Moss who is making Tom Brady or Terrell Owens making Tony Romo, remember that neither of those receivers would be doing what they're doing without a very good quarterback delivering them the ball.
I knew it! Pat, in your face!

I should have also said that great receivers make great QB's even better - which is the case this year with both QB's - who wouldn't be doing quite as much as they are w/o those guys. Think Joe Montana/Steve Young with Jerry Rice. I think both QB's would have been hall of famers w/o Rice but it was a no brainer with him.

A receiver is only as good as the QB getting him the ball. Luckily the PAFFL rewards more point per TD and yards for the WR than the QB :)

We need to address this issue at the Winter Meetings.
