Top Free Agent / Waiver Wire Fantasy Pickups

Ok, this won't be relevant for all fantasy leaguers because the PAFFL is an extremely deep league (16 teams w/ 20+ players per team) but below is a list of some of the top free agent or waiver wire pickups in fantasy leagues.  Remember not all these are relevant but as noted some if not all could be extremely valuable in the weeks ahead as the NFL season gets into future weeks.

  • RB Jesse Chatman - Miami Dolphins - Ronnie Brown is still the starter but Chatman got a bunch of red zone carries and 63 total yards.   Cam Cameron appears to like him as much as Brown so he'll be a consistent producer but he may never be startable in smaller leagues.
  • RB Derrick Ward - New York Giants - Ward is getting the bulk of the work in Jacobs place tonight. Ward is actually outplaying Jacobs rushing for 83 yards on 11 carries and tacking on another 25, a TD on 4 catches heading into the late 4th quarter.  If Jacobs is hurt for an extended time, expect Ward to become a top 30 fantasy back, worthy of starting in ten team leagues that start three running backs (RB3). Even if Jacobs is able to return Ward may have shown enough to share carries in a thunder / lightning type of backfield.
  • RB Kenton Keith - Indianapolis Colts - Keith is a backup RB but its on the NFL's most consistently prolific offense and he can expect between 5 to 10 touches (on average) per week, resulting in fantasy production on those weeks where the final score will be lopsided.  And if the 2nd year (and injury prone) RB Joesph Addai were to miss anytime, Keith would immediately be a top 15 fantasy back.
  • RB Chris Brown - Tennessee Titans - Brown should be on a roster in just about every league, he's a former 1000 yard back with little competition to be the featured guy on a team with a great young offensive line.  Plus he ran for 175 yards on 19 carries against one of the NFL's best run defenses.  He is a top 20 fantasy back at this point but he'll be inconsistent from week to week.
  • QB Luke McCown - Tampa Bay Buccaneers - McCown played well all preseason, if Garcia were to miss any significant time, expect him to be the starter who could surprise folks with his mobility and arm strength.
  • QB Chris Redman - Atlanta Falcons - We've all seen what Joey Harrington can do (little), so after a terrible week one performance (that resulted in 2 picks returned for TD's) expect them to acquire another QB and give Redman a chance in the near term.
  • WR Shaun McDonald - Detroit Lions - McDonald will be inconsistent week to week but he'll surprise with weeks like this one (6 catches for 90 yards & a TD)
  • WR Amani Toomer - New York Giants - Toomer is a veteran who won't shock the world but he's Eli Manning's security blanket of sorts which tonight resulted in 8 catches for 90 yards.

All but Toomer, Brown & McCown are available in the PAFFL so it'll be an active and fun first week of free agent pickups.

Can the commish please post the FA draft order (I beleive it is the worst-to-first from last year) and time slots?

I commented on this in email but the time slots & FA draft order were dropped before last year's season.

1) The order only effects priority if two (or more) teams bid the same amount on the same player, then the tie is broken based on priority order. For week 1 that order should be last year's finish but I'm still looking into how that works.

2) Time slots are a thing of the past (a much more manual, time consuming past).

And yes, non-playoff teams (or the weaker teams) are technically losing a little value that they had prior to the 2006 season but then again they also get top 8 rookie picks, they now are the only teams that get a topper/holdover AND they have priority in the free agent pick up process. but unlike in year's past they DON'T have a monopoly on the best free agent drafts.

I guess teams need to work a little harder to be competitive :)

The free agent auction order & available cash are updated on the site's free agent page. If anybody has any questions, let me know.
