The FootballOutsider.com site, from the creators of the Pro Football Prospectus, did an analysis of which colleges produce the most professional (NFL) talent. They created a point system which credits each school for producing draft picks (sliding scale down for 1st thru 7th round selections), NFL starters, Pro Bowlers, etc.
The results were interesting. For more detail read the article in its entirety
Top 15 schools are:
- Miami 834.5 points
- Florida State 646.5 points
- Ohio State 642.5 points
- Georgia 640.5 points
- Michigan 613.5 points
- Tennessee 562.5 points
- Florida 486.5 points
- LSU 471.5 points
- Texas 435 points
- Nebraska 413 points
- Auburn 401 points
- California 387.5 points
- USC 377 points
- Notre Dame 358 points
- Penn State 339 points
The things that jump out at me are:
- USC being only #13 and behind the University of California? SC is being held back somewhat since this is only 2000 thru 2007, many of their recent talented NFL entries are just starting to rack up starting spots and pro bowls whereas Miami is #1 because between 1999-2003 they were minting between 3 & 5 1st round selections who are all in the prime of their careers today.
- SEC has been dominant on the field and in the NFL with 6 of the top 15 programs on this list.
- The next best is the Big Ten with 3. The Pac-10 and Big 12 each brought 2 to the party.
No Stanford??? suspect
