ESPN's Floyd Reese, the former Tennessee Titans GM from 1995 thru 2006, wrote a nice piece on the selection process of QB Vince Young last season. He discusses their specific situation last season and how it effected their thinking going into the draft.
The most interesting part of the piece was the last paragraph,
We would have been content with any of the three highly-rated prospects, but the final decision came down to Vince Young's athleticism. We felt that, despite the fact that Young was the least experienced college player in the group, in a year he would be as mature as both Cutler & Leinart. The difference in athleticism might allow Young to be something very special, and that is why we drafted him. As it turns out Young was everything we expected with the ball in his hands, but he is much more as a leader, competitor and as a winner.
Teams often under rate intangibles, which is what leads to Ryan Leaf and Jeff George being selected at the top of the draft. This is a good example of sticking with the best athlete who had as good or better intangibles. For one season so far, it appears it was the right choice.
