According to ProFootballWeekly, The Jaguars have made no secret about their interest in Dolphins QB Daunte Culpepper. Soon after the Dolphins acquired QB Trent Green in a trade with the Chiefs, the Jaguars held an organizational meeting to evaluate Culpepper, who had his best campaigns in Minnesota under Jaguars assistant head coach Mike Tice. The Jaguars’ coaches even told their top two quarterbacks, Byron Leftwich and David Garrard, about their interest in Culpepper. We hear there is almost no chance the Jaguars would trade for Culpepper, but they will be at the head of the line to sign Culpepper if the Dolphins release him.
Entertaining the Culpepper option is yet another sign that the Jaguars have not settled on their quarterback of the future. Leftwich is the No. 1 quarterback heading into training camp, but his relationship with head coach Jack Del Rio is as shaky as ever. Plus, Leftwich has only one year left on his contract, and the Jaguars have not offered him an extension. Adding to the intrigue is the fact David Garrard is seemingly a better fit in their offense with mobility and a stronger arm than Culpepper or Leftwich.
Fantasy Prognosis: Culpepper could have a domino effect on the Jaguars QB situation but that's making some big assumptions. One is that Miami will dispose of him at some point, a likely scenario but not guaranteed. The second is that he's healthy enough and will play better than Leftwich and/or Garrard to justify being the Jags starter. At this point I'm not sure he is.
