Buffalo Bills selected Stanford QB Trent Edwards with the #92 overall selection (#29 in the 3rd round) in the 2007 NFL draft. Edwards was one of the most highly recruited QB's out of high school (along with Vince Young) but he joined an undermanned Stanford team that won only 10 games in his 31 starts. He is athletic, has a good arm but he didn't show the leadership necessary to drive the Cardinal to respectability. Edwards has potential to be an NFL starter but he'll be a developmental player for at least the next season.
Scouting Report:
- Position: Quarterback
- Height: 6'3"
- Weight: 222
- 40 Time: 4.81
Edwards has all the measurables to be a starting NFL quarterback but after being one of the top recruits in the country he didn't develop much in the Pac-10. In fairness to him, he played on arguably one of the worst Stanford football squads in its school history and he spent more time picking himself up than he did throwing to open receivers. He has a strong arm, good pocket presence and accuracy, if he can stay healthy and learn for a couple of years, Edwards could develop into a starting QB. For his college career, Edwards threw for 5,429 yards completing 56.3% of his throws, tossing 36 TD's and 33 picks.
Fantasy Prognosis: Edwards will begin the season as Buffalo's emergency QB (#3) and barring major injuries won't see any time on the field in 2007. However if J.P. Losman doesn't take the next step in his development, Edwards could get a look during the 2008 training camp. So dynasty league (keeper leaguers) should categorize him as a deep sleeper to start in '08.
