Detroit Lions selected Georgia Tech WR Calvin Johnson with the #2 overall pick in the 2007 NFL draft. Calvin Johnson is rated by most draft experts as the top talent on the draft board this year so the Lions took their 4th top 10 WR selection in the past five years - an unprecedented number. Forget history though because Johnson should be a dynamic player who will pair with Roy Williams to become the best WR tandem in the NFL.
Scouting Report:
- Position: Wide Receiver
- Height: 6'4"
- Weight: 237
- 40 Time: 4.38
Calvin Johnson is arguably the most physically gifted athlete in this draft and many believe the best WR in any draft, ever! The nearly universal praise is a result of massive size, incredible speed, workout numbers (i.e. 46' vertical) and dominant performances in the SEC for a team that lacked a QB or much surrounding talent. Couple with that a great work ethic and team first attitude, coaches and scouts were all hooked on Calvin Johnson as the next great NFL player.
Fantasy Prognosis: Calvin Johnson is arguably the most physically gifted athlete in this draft and many believe he has the strongest work ethic as well. The combination of those things should make him an NFL success, however he's not your typical Mike Martz WR (size & strength) and its not their primary need. Expect Johnson to be a starter and worthy of a fantasy roster spot, potentially even a fantasy starter in the '07 season but with limitless potential in 2008 & beyond.
2007 Predicted Numbers:
