Philadelphia Eagles selected Houston QB Kevin Kolb with the #36 overall selection (#4 of the 2nd round) in the 2007 NFL draft. Kolb was one of the fastest movers in the week's leading up to the draft, he's a system quarterback who many feel will be a good west coast system guy. Philadelphia clearly wanted to develop a better contingency plan for injury prone Donovan McNabb who will be 30 years old next year and isn't getting any younger.
Scouting Report:
- Position: Quarterback
- Height: 6'3"
- Weight: 218
- 40 Time: 4.85
Kevin Kolb has good measurables, nice arm strength and mobility. He is an accurate passer who can make most throws and has shown the leadership qualities scouts for when they talk about 'intangibles'. On the flip side Kolb has played in a pass friendly, spread offensive system where he didn't learn how to read traditional defenses - scouts call him a 'System QB'. He will also need to learn how to take care of the ball. One scout called him a 'poor man's Brett Favre', that maybe extreme but clearly the Eagles felt his strengths fit their system well.
Fantasy Prognosis: Kolb is nothing more than a developmental QB in 2007 as he'll enter training camp #4 on the depth chart (behind McNabb, K. Holcomb and AJ Feeley) and will be learning a pro style, west coast offensive system for the first time. Traditional fantasy leaguers shouldn't worry about Kolb this year but keeper league guys could take a flyer on him but its more than likely Kolb won't see any playing time until 2008 or 2009, and it may take 4 seasons before he truly sees NFL action.
