Miami Dolphins selected BYU QB John Beck with the #40
overall selection (#8 of the 2nd round) in the 2007 NFL draft. Beck is a 26 year old mature college QB, who many compare to Drew Brees, could start sooner than many realize in the NFL, which maybe necessary given the current depth of Miami Dolphins quarterbacks.
Scouting Report:
- Position: Quarterback
- Height: 6'2"
- Weight: 205
- 40 Time: 4.77
John Beck is a bit small but he's smart, mechanically sound, mobile and accurate. Some feel he has a low ceiling but others think he could be a good starter as soon as this year. Given Beck's age (26) and college production (38 starts, 11,021 yards passing on 62.4% completion percentage and 79 TD passes with only 34 picks) he appears to have the experience. If Culpepper is still around and healthy and/or Miami acquires Trent Green, don't expect Beck to play much.
Fantasy Prognosis: By using a 2nd round selection on Beck, the Miami Dolphins are planning to develolp him into their potential future starter. When that future comes is anybody's guess but given the Dolphins current QB depth chart and Beck's maturity, that time could come as early as mid-season 2007. So don't draft him yet (unless you're a devout Mormon) but watch the QB developments in Miami because they have enough offensive talent to produce a quality backup fantasy QB. As for keeper leagues, Beck has some long-term potential but at this point there is no guarantee Beck will ever be a quality starter so don't waste your time at this point.
2007 Predicted Numbers:
Touches: 225 Pass Attempts
Total Yards: 1450 Yards
TD's: 9 TD's
