The Oakland Raiders used the #1 overall pick in the 2007 draft on LSU QB JaMarcus Russell. The 6'6" 263 pound junior has a very high ceiling of potential but also possibly a lower floor than Notre Dame QB Brady Quinn. With a rare cannon for an arm and consistent growth & production in the SEC, he appears to be a developing franchise quarterback.
Scouting Report:
- Position: Quarterback
- Height: 6'6"
- Weight: 263
- 40 Time: 4.76
JaMarcus Russell is the prototype quarterback with massive size and a rocket arm (he threw 65 yards from his knees and routinely throws bullets). He has demonstrated an ability to hit receivers in stride from fifty yards away, displaying tremendous accuracy and touch on many NFL required throws. In addition he continued to develop each of his years at LSU which shows how much higher his potential could be. On the contrary Russell doesn't have great mobility, at times he'll rely on his size and sit too long in the pocket, and he was surrounded with elite talent which padded his numbers (both his starting receivers were selected in the 1st round). From what I have seen, Russell is a rare talent that made those around him better and given the proper time to develop should be another transcending QB who becomes a regular pro bowler and mans the Oakland Raiders QB position for the next decade or two.
Fantasy Prognosis: Russell will enter 2007 as the backup to veteran Josh McCown but he should get playing time towards the end of the year as he develops into the starting spot for 2008. And with the skill position talent around him (WR's Randy Moss, Jerry Porter, Ronald Curry & Doug Gabriel) he could surprise some in '07. For now expect him to be a fantasy backup in '07, worth a roster spot in deep & keeper leagues, where he has spectacular potential.
2007 Predicted Numbers:
Touches: 125 Pass Attempts
Total Yards: 1250 Passing Yards
TD's: 8
